Kia ora and welcome to the parents and caregivers section of the website.
There are many ways the RTLB team support schools. We work at a school systems level with groups of teachers, class referrals and groups of students. We also receive requests for support from teachers for individual students. If a referral is made by the school to us to support your child, the RTLB service will:
• need a signed consent form from you (your consent can be withdrawn at any stage)
• collect information about how your child is functioning within the school environment in relation to the issues or concerns that have been identified
• contact you and ask about what aspirations you have for your child
• collaboratively develop a plan with you and your child’s teacher that is strengths based and inclusive
• support the teacher and yourself to implement the plan and monitor progress
• support the school and yourself to make referrals to other agencies if necessary.
• discontinue support once we have met (or on the way to meeting) the goals as negotiated
The RTLB service does not:
• undertake cognitive assessments
• make diagnoses (eg Dyslexia, Specific learning disabilities, ADHD)
• work with students because they have a diagnosis (all students are eligible)
• remove students from class and work with them one to one
• accept referrals from parents/caregivers. All referrals are made by schools.
If at any time you have concerns about your child’s academic progress, behaviour or social skills at school, we suggest that you first meet with your child’s teacher, Special Needs Coordinator or the Principal.
